Construction Progress

On Monday, October 7, 2002, the steel that had been ordered in May finally arrived.  There are twelve flatbed trucks to be delivered. Since our site is tight, as the steel is delivered it is erected before another shipment arrives.

A view of the crane that  is used to hoist the steel from the truck and from the ground to their designated spot. The crane begins to lift one of the columns that will support the structure of our new center. Another view of the crane as it lifts the steel column and carries it over the site. The workers position the column directly over the footing and secure it in place.

A view from the corner nearest the school looking across the site as the columns stand in place. Another view looking toward the school, with the elevator shaft to the right, as the columns are positioned. Another view from the other corner showing the building emerging as the columns are sited. A shipment of i-beams that will support the floor between the columns awaits installation.

Another angle of the building in progress. This is taken from the front corner.  The cement walls to the right and center are for a ramp to the basement level. The floor begins to be positioned.  This area will be the kitchen.  The cutout in the cement center to right is for a doorway. This shows the floor beginning to be installed and the structure of the center becoming more clear.

The joists are outside the building and will support a terrace between the two buildings since they do not meet and will not be directly connected. A view from above showing the progress of work in the first couple of hours. The floor joists have arrived and await installation. The floor that will be the main hallway that leads to the elevator is shown.  The opening to the right is the main stairway to the basement and second floor.

A view from the basement.  This area will be storage area and the chapel will be above. This is the floor decking for the chapel area.  Beyond the columns will be the hallway and the elevator. This area is closer to the school, in the basement and will house the mechanical needs of the building. The steel frame of the building is now complete and the different floors and elevation of the roof are visible.

From the attic of the rectory, a view of the building looking down on the two floors. The work on the yard makes progress.  Here the area behind the church undergoes changes and upheaval. Immediately outside the back door of the rectory, a new catch basin is installed to collect rain water and runoff. A new driveway to exit the parking lot takes shape as the retaining wall is built outside the Marcy St. door of the church.

From the road to behind the church, another view of the retaining wall.  The road will be located to the left of the orange cones. Another view of the wall.  The driveway to exit will be located behind this retaining wall and intersect with Marcy St, preventing driving in front the church doors. A view of the retaining wall looking back toward the road from the retaining wall.  The corner of the church is visible to the left.  Here the driveway will be on the right. A dry stack of the stone that will be used in our new center.  Propped in front are color samples for the windows and trim.

Outside the cafeteria, the wall be faced with the stone to the left; the one with the color sample of the future doors propped in front. The stairs from the parking lot to the cafeteria begin to take shape as the forms have been prepared by a carpenter for pouring. The front stairs to the building are readied.  These are near the school and be accessed by Hamilton Street. The core catch basin is installed with Joe in the shovel, Ed and Paul maneuvering it into position correctly.

A wider angle view of the future parking lot as the grade is readied.  The opening to the front left is a catch basin to be finished. The first floor of the new building looking from the chapel area across to the front entrance and toward the school building. A look at the opening for the stairs from the first floor to the basement.  The block wall is a shear wall that will be around the stairs. A look at the area between the buildings.  Eventually this area will be covered in precast concrete for a terrace area.

A view of the new building from across the grading taking place for our new parking lot. A look from the church ramp across the parking lot area to view the new driveway area. The new exit takes shape around the back of the church and onto Marcy Street. Another look at the widened driveway behind the church and the parking area beyond.

The grading of the new parking area continues to improve behind the buildings. The outline of the new center takes shape against a bright blue sky. The final pieces of steel lie in wait for their turn to be lifted into place. A hole waits for a structure to be installed to collect runoff water near the church.  .
The next stage of our construction is the paving of the driveway.  It is continued  on page 3 ...
