Each year at our Sunday celebration of the Eucharist we welcome
children to share the banquet of the Lord for the first time. This
year, there were three celebrations of this wonderful event.
At each class, as part of their preparation, they prepare an aspect
of the liturgy for that day. In their first class, remembering
their baptism, they decorate the cloth for the altar with their
handprints and names, for we have been called by name. During
the liturgy, the children bring forth the cloth and drape it over
the altar. They also bring candles with each of their names
and flowers. The quilt they contribute to with a square adorns
the sanctuary. There is a model of the church with their names
on the 'building blocks' of the church. At their last lesson,
when they learn of the mission of Eucharist they prepare a special
bank for donations they will earn to be shared with the poor.
These are brought to the sanctuary in baskets and can be seen placed
on the floor near the altar.

Communicants. |

Each child is asked
to complete a quilt square that is a foot square. This
individual piece is then joined with the others to create a
quilt that will warm a needy person of our community. This
activity identifies our unity as the Body of Christ. |
