First Communion 2005

Each year at our Sunday celebration of the Eucharist we welcome children to share the banquet of the Lord for the first time. This year, there were three celebrations of this wonderful event.  At each class, as part of their preparation, they prepare an aspect of the liturgy for that day.  In their first class, remembering their baptism, they decorate the cloth for the altar with their handprints and names, for we have been called by name.  During the liturgy, the children bring forth the cloth and drape it over the altar.  They also bring candles with each of their names and flowers.  The quilt they contribute to with a square adorns the sanctuary.  There is a model of the church with their names on the 'building blocks' of the church.  At their last lesson, when they learn of the mission of Eucharist they prepare a special bank for donations they will earn to be shared with the poor.  These are brought to the sanctuary in baskets and can be seen placed on the floor near the altar.

A model of our parish church, 'built' with stones that have each name of our First Communicants. Each child is asked to complete a quilt square that is a foot square.  This individual piece is then joined with the others to create a quilt that will warm a needy person of our community. This activity identifies our unity as the Body of Christ.
This quilt has a cross in its pattern.

Our first group lines up to enter church. The candidates with their parents gather in the sanctuary for the renewal of their baptismal promises.  They hold the candles from their baptism. The children gather around the altar during the Eucharistic Prayer. The sung response is about our daily bread, broken and shared with others.

The candidates line up at the door in anticipation of beginning the Mass. The children and their parents gather around the altar for the renewal of their baptismal promises.  During offertory, the candidates present candles with their names written on them. Others from the class bring their offering for the poor in homemade offering boxes.
